,
Here is a quick update for all the anxious OpenShot users out there. Version 1.2 is shaping up nicely, with a ton of fixes, enhancements, and new features. This new version is easier to use, more feature packed, faster, and more stable than ever before.
We have completed 42 tickets on LaunchPad so far, and many of those tickets were quite complex. There are only a few small details remaining, but mostly just testing, documentation, and translations.

Which brings me to... Translations! There are many new English words and phrases that have been added to OpenShot, and they need to be translated to your favorite language as soon as possible!
Translating OpenShot is one of the easiest ways to contribute. All you need is a web browser, a free LaunchPad account, and thats it! Still not sure how it works? Let me give you the step by step:
Step 2) Goto the OpenShot Translations page (https://translations.launchpad.net/openshot)
Step 3) Click on your language, and begin translating one phrase at a time. Be sure to filter the list of phrases to only show "untranslated items".
Step 4) Enjoy the good feeling of helping an open-source project!
The faster these phrases are translated, the faster we can release version 1.2. So, please share the link with others and help us out!
Themes, Titles, and 3D Animations
Are translations not your thing? Only know a single language but still want to help out? Well, we are looking for new themes, SVG title templates, and of course Blender 3D animated title templates. If you have a possible contribution in these categories, please attach a compressed file with your work to the following LaunchPad ticket. Just imagine how cool you will be once we showcase and distribute your artwork around the world with OpenShot. Okay, so you wont be any cooler, but you will be appreciated by me!
- Themes - OpenShot can be completely skinned and themed. To create a new theme, simply find the /openshot/themes/blue_glass/ folder on your computer (assuming you have OpenShot installed) and make a copy and start modifying it.
- Titles - Title templates are just simple SVG images that can be created with Inkscape (or any other image application capable of saving in SVG format). If you can come up with original templates (very subjective I know), we will include them.
- 3D Animations - If you are a talented Blender user, we are also looking for slick text / title animations. The .blend file (version 2.5 required) is all we need, and we'll even hook up the Python automation for you. All we need are some original and awesome Blender animations with text objects.
I am looking forward to see what you will come up with. Just remember to attach your work as a compressed file to the LaunchPad ticket mentioned above, and we will take a look. Thanks as usual for the support, and I'll post another update soon as this release comes to an end.

I can not filter the untranslated phrases for the Greek language. the number Under Untranslated is not a link. I can use it on other projects just fine.
Any ideas?
September 7, 2010 11:50 AM
@firewalker,
Once you click on "Greek", the first dropdown on the page should let you select "untranslated items". I just tested it and it works fine. Or you can try and use the following link:

French translations already done !
Bravo à la communauté française ;)
September 7, 2010 12:15 PM
Heh, translating into English (Canada) is the easiest thing in the World :p

I think you should have a daily PPA, for users that want to test your latest development versions.
You have two ppas right now
https://edge.launchpad.net/~openshot.developers/+archive/ppa
https://edge.launchpad.net/~jonoomph/+archive/openshot-edge
Where the official/stable is behind the times at 1.1.2 and the edge/experimental is actually the stable version at 1.1.3

Ok, I completed the Greek translation. I just don't know how to translate the
"Chroma Hold"
phrase.
September 7, 2010 1:40 PM
@Anonymous,
You are correct. The PPAs need to be updated, and updated more frequently. However, updating them is not automatic and requires lots of manual steps from me, which is why I wait until official releases.
I did not realize the Official PPA was not at 1.1.3, so I just fixed that.
If I can find the time, I suppose I could automate the PPA build process. Perhaps after the next release I will tackle that. =)

@firewalker,
Chroma Hold basically means only display a single color, while all other colors are converted to greyscale. How to say that in Greek... I'll leave that up to you. =)

@Bristow
Merci
Thanks a lot

Hey there Jonathon, that was tiring :S
Although I'm neither fast nor that outstanding in my native language 'arabic', i made a progress in the translation section!
I've translated +100 ones in one go alone, not knowing any other people who'd contribute in real life. However, i failed to translate the last 8, leaving the project 99% completed, 1% incomplete!
Also, i think they're something wrong with no.498 in the english text: "Adjusts the brightness the image" --> shouldn't it be "Adjusts the brightness of the image"?
:)
September 7, 2010 5:08 PM
@Anxious Nut,
Thanks for the help translating Arabic! I fixed the English typo, and the phrase should now be "Adjusts the brightness of the image". Thanks!

Firstly, thanks for all the hard work developing this program. I promise to contribute some cash very soon!
I just want to know if the next version 1.2 will work better with AVCHD. I just couldn't edit anything as it was playing to stuttered. will it work with VDPAU and the closed Nvidia driver automatically, or need some tinkering?
September 7, 2010 10:26 PM
@timjwharton,
The video editing framework that OpenShot uses (MLT) does support VDPAU, as long as VDPAU is compiled into FFmpeg. I am not sure if Ubuntu's version of FFmpeg has VDPAU compiled in or not.
OpenShot has no code to enable or disable VDPAU. Assuming it is installed correctly, MLT should automatically enable it.

Jonathan, I know this is out of place but I wanted to be the 9000th person to say I'm in the same place as you were 2 years ago. Tried at least 5 editors, had settled on kino but then went and got an HD camera. I had a 20 second clip, and wanted to trim it to 10 seconds and add a new sound track.
Is this a simple task? Yes. Could ANY of the 3 editors I installed handle it? No. Kino - DV only. Lives: Spent an hour figuring it out, then it crashed on export. Pitivi? Maybe one day.
Just one thing, if you search the web for "non linear video editor linux" or similar, openshot really doesn't feature in the results. It might be worth putting a post on a few of the most commonly returned forum threads, drawing attention to your project?
September 8, 2010 12:58 PM
@Andy S,
I'm glad you found OpenShot. When I google "non linear video editor linux", OpenShot is the 2nd result. What search engine are you using?
September 9, 2010 5:29 AM
Jonathan, my bad, you're right, I had actually done a more specific set of searches, focusing on what I already knew - the danger of a little knowledge!
I guess half the problem is that threads discussing editors are often older than this project - see for example these results.

I see multiple different english (from different countries) but I don't see French (Canada), also known as french Canadian or Québecois... It would be great if this varation of the language were available... Because some french expressions are very strange and uncommon for quebecers and it would be very appreciated if we could have a language adapted to ours here...
September 9, 2010 9:25 AM
@Anonymous,
You should be able to set you preferred language in LaunchPad to French (Canada). However, I don't see it listed with the other languages.
If you have the time, you can post a question to the developers of LaunchPad at: https://answers.launchpad.net/launchpad/+addquestion. I'm sure they can fix the issue.

I'm really happy to hear that the next version is coming very soon but I just want to know and like timjwharton said if AVCHD is much supported because I have a Sony Handycam HDR-XR550V
