What features do you want to see in OpenShot? What things would you like to see improved?
Please help us shape the future of OpenShot by participating in this brief survey. We will be using the results of this survey to decide what features will be included in the next version of OpenShot. Contributing to OpenShot has never been easier. =) Depending on how this goes, I would like to take a similar approach after each release of OpenShot, and create a survey between releases to help measure what features our users want.
This survey will be open for 7 days, and then we will publish the results for everyone to enjoy! Please help us spread the word about this survey. Here is the link: http://daisurvey.com/welcome?openshot.

Really good idea !
I'm using cinelerra and Kdenlive ... An not really often Openshot because of one thing. Crash recovery !
And a drag and drop compositing feature ... (instead of ugly numbers)

G'day, I just took the survey and thought I'd drop you a line. Firstly, congratulations on your great program. Secondly, about the survey: Most of my video work is making DVD menus for small businesses, so I do a lot of stuff with compositions and effects (I use Blender a lot) and I kind of found myself wanting to tick all or most of the boxes on some of the pages. Maybe it would have been better if some of the options were rank-able or something so that I could give them an order of preference. Just a thought. Cheers.
Oh, also, despite what I do, I'm not in favour of OpenShot trying to become a fully fledged DVD authoring suit. Better to concentrate on the video editing and not stretch yourself thin, at least for the time being anyway.

Hello,
One feature that could be very hlepfull is to have the ability to cut the clip exactly where the timeline is currently positionned. This would allow really precise cut. If it exists, do not hesitate to let me know since I did not find how to do it.
Keep on improving this nice program.

One suggestion would have to allow cut on the exact timeline cursor position for very precise cutting.
Keep on improving this verry nice editor.

Thanks for the survey. I appreciate the opportunity to give input for the next release.
I agree with Alex, though, that it might have been better to be able to rank our choices. I checked a lot of them but there are really only about three that right now I consider critical to making OpenShot as good or better than most other editors out there.

Survey is a great idea.
The biggest thing that irritates me is the interface - too much space is taken up with static elements that shouldn't. e.g. preview and the huge buttons underneath. Would be better to lose all those buttons and have the buttons "float" at the bottom of the preview window when the mouse is hovering over the preview window.
Much more space should be given to the main working area which is the timelines.
Timelines should be easy to expand by simply clicking on the time area and dragging right (to stretch) or dragging left (to compress).
But the major major issue for me is the inability to drag and drop multiple clicks at the same time. I personally like to drag multiple clips all at once onto a time-line and then click and shuffle clips around to get a "story". Once this story is achieved at this point I start to dress up the video with transitions and fades etc. Its very difficult with openshot to achieve this.

I mostly use Kdenlive, but took the survey in the hopes that it would address my biggest reason for not using OpenShot: how ugly it is. Sadly that was not part of the survey.
I don't even know other areas that OpenShot might be lacking because it's too ugly to use, those butt ugly, glossy and huge controls should be changed back to the GTK standard.

It's hard to find subjects to better OpenShot, but finaly, I found some possibilities:
1. Sound manipulation some sound is original to loud, other sounds arn't just not loud enough, to much basses or not enough basses etc. It would be nice to correct the sound within OpenShot just as video is manipulatable.
2. small pictures on the timeline to more easy cut scenes while mounting.
3. a way to support OpenShot in Euro's without sponsoring pledgie.com or institutions other then OpenShot.

Just took the survey and am glad that you gave the opportunity. I did tick most of the boxes when asked what the features I'd like to see were but it makes sense to limit to 5 otherwise there'd be too many requests to handle.
Also, to the guy who said OS is ugly. I could not disagree much more than I do. I think the standard skin is stunningly beautiful and it's one of the best looking Open Source programs I've seen. I also think its design lends itself perfectly to the accessibility which is a key part of OpenShot. Not only that but given how easy it is to reskin I think his comment was a bit hasty.
I agree that I'd like OpenShot to focus on editing. I use it for online videos so DVD creation is not a major feature for me. I wouldn't complain if it was included or a sister program put together which arranged open shot videos in menus but I don't think it should be a high priority thing.
I also think cutting on the timeline where the red bar is positioned would be useful. When I'm editing I find myself pausing and then zooming in to cut as close to the line as possible since you can't actually cut on it at the moment. Also the ability to raise the volume of a clip above 100% would be nice.

Done! well now wait for the futures goodies, nice idea.

It's needs a simpler text editor like Windows Movie Maker has. All Linux movie editors are lacking this.

Hi !
Sorry I don't send you a personal email, but I hope you're happy anyway ;)
First : thanks a lot, great job ! OpenShot's masterpiece is the only video editor to suit me very fine :) (at last !)
I'd like to strench 3 features that cost me while video-editing :
_ no keyboard shortcut
_ no way to cut the clip exactly where the timeline is positionned (+1) -> C-k to do that would be perfect :D
_ I found the way they modulate the sound in PiTiVi video editor very nice : a red line that you can curve as you want.
thx, bye

Hello! Openshot is best from opensorce by functionality/stability/user-friendly.
What I would expect in the next version:
-- ability to remove the blank space on the time-line when you cut some piece out of the clip (in other words all of remaining clips on the time-line should jump to the left as one) Take a look how it is made in Premier.
-- ability to select and move multiple clips on the time-line (grouping would be best). I liked how this made in PiTiVi
-- transitions should snap and remain sticked to both edges of the clips they applied to. Now it is very difficult to adjust as transitions snap only to the edge of the 1st track
-- standard/logical short-cuts (Shift+left mouse click on the clip on time-line expected to add this clip to the selection and not delete it like now!) Take a look at GIMP or Inkscape shortcuts.
These are very simple things I guess but without them video-composing is quite struggling.
But anyway thanks a lot for your hard work!

I'll second what the others have said. Openshot needs better sound manipulation like variable volume during clips. The PiTiVi idea is similar to some other editors and is easy to use.
I'd also like better stabiliy. I've only tried Openshot a few times, but it seemed to crash a lot when editing my videos.
Don't worry about the eye candy yet until the basic functionality and stability is improved.

I would like openshot had some tools to make the dubbing movies easier.
May 6, 2010 2:23 PM
I like to have more/better presets for texts. Those of WindowsMovieMaker 6 (vista) for example. Some really great overlays.

OpenShot Video Editor is really well done! I discovered it some weeks ago, and I feel that it may can be the "little but big" brother of KDEnlive.
I'm really happy for this, and for the importance that OpenShot developers give to the users: it's amazing!
A huge thanks to the brave developers of this project.
p.s. Sorry for my English, but it's not my first language...

Killer feature : multicamera mode.
For example, you have three cameras filming the same thing, you syncronise the tracks, merge them and then switch between tracks... That would be so awesome.

I want to amplify the sound!

open shot is wonderfull, thank you,
just to be able to drag and drop multiple clips would be great.
thank you again.

I love Openshot, but it is missing two things, Crash Recovery and Audio when scrolling through video. Getting cue points is a killer.
Thanks for the great product so far and I hope it continues to grow.
