Follow the latest news on OpenShot Video Editor!

,

Are you a Windows developer? More specifically, are you a C / C++ developer with a love for video editing?

We are issuing a challenge to find a willing developer to help make the MLT framework compile and work under Windows. If you accept this challenge, please contact me ASAP and join the OpenShot Developers LaunchPad team.

The reward for the brave developer that takes on this challenge will be the love and good will of all video editing fans on Windows. I'll even throw in an OpenShot T-Shirt. =) Also, there is a FAQ with some technical notes about Windows support, for those that are interested.

What does this mean for the Linux version of OpenShot? Absolutely nothing. Porting MLT to Windows does not mean that OpenShot will magically start working on Windows. There is still much work to do, but if we are ever going to support Windows, we need to take this first step.

So... let the challenge begin!

    No no no! Why can't we just have one special application just for us, linux users!!

    I know people might know about linux if they use OpenShot on windows! However, if they knew how good it is and they can get it for free and that all they have to do is to install a free OS, I think they'll do it! I know a lot of people use Windows just because of one app! And for that I say this being only for linux might make linux more popular!

    @anxiousnut,
    Linux is my favorite OS, and will continue to be the focus for OpenShot. However, by helping improve MLT, we are opening the door for more developers who can come and port and package OpenShot for Windows. Who knows how successful that effort will be, but I feel like it's worth a try. Thanks!

    I feel that it is a worthy cause. It is not like it will harm the development of the Linux version and is a long way off from any real completion. At the very least, some groundwork will be out in the open for others to build off of. The more the merrier, even if some of those people prefer Windows.

    Good luck. I wish I knew how to code so I could help. If there's one thing sorely missing in windows is a good open source NLE. In fact, off the top of my head I can't think of any free NLE for windows, even a closed source one.
    The reality is too many people still cannot give up windows, and many users are still intimidated by the idea of setting up a virtual OS or a dual-boot system. Better to have people using open source software on windows than not at all.
    Keep up the good work.

    Have you followed up this work? http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_name=27dd34e61003100959ve86fc1l4e9e645bdcf94aa4%40mail.gmail.com&forum_name=mlt-devel

    @Paul,
    Yes, I am familiar with that. However, I never heard anymore after those 2 emails.

    I have tried to do it for 2 days, but it's very hard, many errors, maybe we need direct help for the MLT team. Sorry but I don't have time now, maybe next year.

    Yay!

    I've been following the development of Openshot and eagerly await the day when it's ported to Windows.

    Dear Openshot team,

    the main reason I re-discovered and cameback to Linux after many many years is free opensource video editing.
    I always wanted to do video editting as a hoby and I tried to find some cracked copies of the famous Windows programs. I didn't like the idea and I also saw that the famous ones where too heavy.

    If I had Openshot for Windows most probably I would still be using Windows.

    Please do not give much of your precious time to this project. I am willing to donate for yout project. But please give your time to the Linux version.

    When I've seen projects that aim to be multi OS, the Linux version is always the second hand version. More people use Windows so new features are added to the Windows version and no one gives a shit about the Linux users. I have seen it many times, haven't you?

    Why not just use all the time for the Linux version to make it as great as possible. There are already more than enough video editors for Windows anyway.

    Well, that's what I feel anyway. Maybe most people don't agree.

    Initial port to Windows using MinGW.

    UPDATE: A branch of MLT now supports Windows, although not much testing has been done yet, and the code has not been merged into the main trunk of MLT yet.

    I'd love to see Openshot on Windows. I have to stick with windows because my media laptop is also my only means of playing blu-ray - and blu-ray on Linux is notoriously awkward. I've been using Adobe Premiere Elements 2 which is ANCIENT. Very functional, in all honesty, but it'd be nice to not have to convert mp4 to avi before editing. Shall try downloading the live cd tonight and giving the latest version of Openshot a whirl. Keep up the good work - for both sides of the OS divide!

    I just love OpenShot. My issue is that my laptop, which is my main computer, is too slow for editing long videos (so i cant have a real good preview when editing). and the only computer I have that could support doing this is under windows only. This is why, for me, a Windows version would be useful :)
    Thanks for at least trying !

    I want OpenShot for Windows, 'cause I don't want to be stuck with Windows Movie Maker at school.

    Too bad I don't know any programming languages, I would help port OpenShot to Windows.
