I am proud to announce that OpenShot version 1.4 has finally been released! This version represents a huge investment by our small and dedicated team of developers, contributors, testers, translators, and users. We love video editing just as much as we love Linux, and we are happy to deliver this amazing open-source software to the world. Before I discuss the details of 1.4, I want to personally thank the following people:

What's Next
My goal is to get OpenShot 1.4 included in Ubuntu 11.10, which is quickly approaching. So, as soon as Debian approves our newest package, I'll submit a sync request to Ubuntu, and apply for a feature freeze exception. We have really focused our testing efforts on Ubuntu 11.10, to ensure the best possible performance and compatibility. I'll post an update once this happens, so everyone can follow along. Enjoy version 1.4, and stay tuned for news about our GTK3 version, new C++ video editing framework, and more!

middle mouse dragging on the canvas works great! really nice one. (except that it would be nice to change cursor to "hand" while dragging)
thank you for great video editor, it's simple but does the job!

I've been searching since Ubuntu 8 for a video editor...Ubuntu 8 was the point in time that I left the corporate Redmond world and embraced Linux. Finally, on a lark, I searched once again and WOW - Openshot. At last I can focus on CREATIVITY! I'm a still photographer and have never shot video before - my very first Bridal Party Montage looks AND feels like I've been editing for millions of YEARS...you ought to watch this first montage ... better yet SPREAD THE WORD - Hands down Openshot is the greatest contribution to the Linux world since Torvalds ... it is THE benchmark against which others will be measured

I'm using the previous version (1.3) in Debian. I wondering if you've got a more descriptive wiki-like page listing the various video effects included in OpenShot. I'm especially interested in a digital film effect (not old film) that can convert the realistic-looking video from a cheap handycam into a dreamy film sequence.

Excellent!
Greek translation done! Actually I don;t know hoe to translate "Removed marker". Where is it?
I have also notice strings missing from the translation. I will fill a bug report.
How can someone access the source code of the future versions?

windows has so many alternatives to video editing but one of the thing that is causing linux to rise in its peak is lack of video editing app. So, I know openshot video editor is the best video editing app ever made for linux. Here's the video i created using openshot 1.3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFiBBPnoaLc&

September 25, 2011 3:50 PM
Maximum export resolution is 3000 x 3000. In future unlock 4K 4096 x 2304 will be possible?

First off - great to hear there is a new improved version of OpenShot available!
I've been using OpenShot 1.3 in AVLinux and wanting to try 1.4 I followed your link to the AVLinux site to download the latest version. However, it looks like the latest version of AVLinux listed in the ISO downloads there is the one I already have (dated June 2011 - which has OpenShot 1.3). Am I missing a link to a newer version of AVLinux that has OpenShot 1.4 or does this not exist?

@firewalker - you can browse the source code via Launchpad - http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~openshot.code/openshot/main/files
Thanks for helping out with the translations.

I just switched from Mac and are happy with OpenShot. Cool code.
Did you do the titles of this video with a standard OpenShot install. Can't find these title effects.
September 27, 2011 1:21 PM
@Thomas, I used the "Color Tiles" animated title, and 2 custom blender animations, which are not yet included in OpenShot. Thanks!

This is the best and most simple and effective video editor for Linux I have seen so far. Unfortunately, this isn't saying much as it is clear that while this project is definitely heading in all the right directions, it has a long way to go before it catches up with the various Windows and Mac OS X tools out there.
This doesn't make me any less excited though. It's REALLY useful. I needed to convert some video taken of a work function and I use Linux even at work. This program enabled me to accomplish most of what I intended to do.
Here's the scenario:
A person made video recordings using his iPhone... hidef even. He was holding his phone in "portrait" position. (Damn! I missed the opportunity to tell him he was holding it wrong!) So the recordings were 90 degrees sideways.
So I needed to rotate the video 90 degrees. OpenShot let me do that. Problem was, it cropped out the top and bottom of the video. In some cases, that might be what I would want. In others, I might want to scale the video down to fit the canvas. In this case, I would have wanted to scale down to fit. I found no such option.
I can't wait to see what great things come up next and I plan to follow this project closely. I have only used it as a transcoder so far but hope to use it for more.
One thing I am going to look for, as a novice with Flash, I like the ability to perform scripted actions keyed from time marks. It would seem natural to be able to do this in a video editor as well. And to have "green screen" type layering, it would be trivial to insert a flying saucer behind some trees in the background.
Unfortunately, my wishing and dreaming is the easy part. The hard work and any and all credit goes to the hard working creators of this software. All applause and praise go to them. Great work so far, but don't stop, don't slow down, keep going as you are hot on the heels of many paid and EXPENSIVE apps out there and you'll put them all to shame in a short time.

I'm a new user to OpenShot. I downloaded and it just randomly closed on me whilst working for about 10-15. I'm guessing it's my computer, because it's kinda old spec, so I've asked 'santa' for some new bits and pieces lol. I don't think it was 1.4 either [I'll check when I get back to my desktop]. For the breif time I used it, I liked the UI, but I did realise audio editing was a bit fiddly.
I want to use OpenShot for animation localisation projects, so I'm not too interested in fiddling with video, but I have to heavily mess with audio, changing volumes, fade in/out, effects etc. And it seamed really fiddly. I can't use another program to edit audio on its own, as I need to time it to the animation.
I used Cinelerra for a little while, and this gave me great control over audio. But it took me an hour and half to do a five minute scene with many SFX still missing, as I was still getting used tot the program (there were many face palms over stupid mistakes where I had to start a clip over). Then for some reason, when I loaded up my save, the audio that I had spent so much time getting perfect was warped and screeching. I looked online for help but no luck, so assuming my setup again.
ANYWAY, my long story coming to an end. OpenShot is much more frendly than Cinelerra, and quicker to get into. But I would realy-really love it if the audio editing could be looked into, and have a visual referance and key frame system like that on Cinelerra and Adobe Premier.
Adobe worked fine on my PC, but I really don't want to go back to windows T^T. It'd be a god send if OpenShot had this feature ^_^.

I've just been trying to figure out how the blue "tron-like" wire framed logo was done. The one found in the screen cap of this video. http://vimeo.com/29465427
Still waiting for forum account approval (really?), so I am left to my own devices in the meantime. Hope someone knows how this was done as it's not in the animated title list that I can see. Thanks
November 13, 2011 7:38 PM
Matt, the tron-like wire frame is a new 3D animation, but has not yet been added to OpenShot. I created it especially for the 1.4 release video, and it was too late to be included. It will likely be included in the next version of OpenShot.
We have had some difficulties with our forums recently, and your membership approval has likely been lost or overlooked. We'll get it fixed as soon as possible. We approve new members to our forums almost daily, so this is not typical. Thanks for your understanding.
November 16, 2011 5:37 PM
Thanks Jonathan, I appreciate it. Everything is in place now, I can login now. I also appreciate the clarification with the tron-like logo, too. Honestly, if I can add it in manually, I'd be thrilled to do so if it was possible. Is this available in the testing PPA perhaps? This is what I use currently. :)
Again, thanks for all you do.

@RogueAngel
The audio problems and a lot of cool and great features will be include from our future 2.0 version.
